Czech Citizenship: CCE Language vs. Zkouška z Reálií — Two Exams, Not One
2026-08-04 · UniPrep2Go Blog
Passing your B1 Czech exam does not mean you are done. The Czech state wants proof of two separate things: can you function in Czech (CCE — Certifikovaná zkouška z češtiny at B1), and do you understand how Czech society works (zkouška z reálií). These are two state exams — booked, paid, prepared, and failed separately. There is no combined citizenship test and no waiver where a high CCE score substitutes for reálie. Confusing them costs CZK 2,000 per retake and months of delay.

Language first? Drill A2/B1 with the Czech CCE Anki deck. Civics next? Use the free Czech Citizenship readiness check and join the reálie Anki waitlist. Read the complete reálie guide for the 30-topic / 300-question strategy.
“I Passed CCE. Why Do I Still Need Another Exam?”
- Can you function in Czech society? → B1 language (CCE)
- Do you understand how Czech society works? → Civics (zkouška z reálií)
Ordering svíčková or debating Kafka does not substitute for either. The state certifies communication and civic knowledge as separate gates.

The Two Exams: Side by Side
Typical figures — confirm with ÚJOP / your centre before booking
| CCE — Czech language | Zkouška z reálií — civics | |
|---|---|---|
| Proves | B1 communication in Czech | Institutions, history, daily life |
| Format | Written (R/L/W) + oral (~15–20 min) | Written only: 30 MCQs |
| Level | B1 for citizenship; A2 for PR | No CEFR level — test is in Czech |
| Pass | Often 60% overall + section floors | 60% (18/30) |
| Time | ~3 hours total (written + oral may be separate days) | 30 minutes |
| Cost | Often CZK 3,700 | Often CZK 2,000 |
| Combo | Often CZK 5,700 when both registered together | Same combo total |
| Retake | Often retake failed part only | Full 30Q + full fee |
| Pool | Standardized B1 tasks (not a public bank) | **300 official NPI questions** published |
| Common fails | Grammar, speaking structure, natural-speed listening | Time, institutions, negative phrasing |
Who Needs What: Residence vs Citizenship
| Status | Language | Civics |
|---|---|---|
| Permanent residence (trvalý pobyt) | Usually **A2** Czech | **None** |
| Citizenship (státní občanství) | **B1** Czech (CCE or equivalent) | **Zkouška z reálií** |
| Exemptions | Age, schooling, disability pathways — verify officially | Same family of exemptions — verify before you skip booking |
If you are only filing for permanent residence, do not spend months on the 300-question reálie bank. Save civics prep for citizenship.
CCE Language: What Actually Fails Candidates
Reading
News, instructions, narratives. Idioms and set phrases that do not translate literally are classic traps.
Listening
Recordings at natural speed, often played twice. Distinguishing near-identical options; the second play is your safety net.
Writing
Personal + formal texts. Colloquial grammar in a žádost / stížnost loses marks even if “fluent.”
Speaking
Intro, photo description, situational dialogue. Scored against B1 descriptors — not a café chat.
A2 vs B1: A2 is survival Czech for many PR paths. B1 needs bureaucracy language, opinions, and complex grammar (aspect, conditionals, subordinate clauses). Passing A2 does not mean you are “almost B1.”
Zkouška z Reálií: 300 Questions, 30 Minutes
One item from each of 30 topics → 30 questions in 30 minutes. Typical split: ~16 civic fundamentals, ~7 geography, ~7 history & culture. The NPI ČR bank of 300 questions is public — the exam is memorization + speed, not invention.
- One minute per item shrinks fast on tables, maps, or multi-clause legal stems
- Negative phrasing (“which does Czech POINT not provide?”) is common
- Numbers matter: EU years, seats, park areas
Full 30-topic breakdown and strategy: see our Complete Guide to the Czech Citizenship Exam (zkouška z reálií).
Cost & Booking Traps
- Same-day booking ≠ one sitting — written CCE and reálie are separate procedures
- Combo vs separate fees — often the same CZK 5,700 total; bundling is convenience, not a discount
- Reálie retake — entire 30Q + full fee, not “only the ones you missed”
- No English reálie — you need B1-level reading of admin Czech under the clock
- Slots fill — register weeks ahead at popular centres
Prep Split: Never Mix the Study Plans
CCE prep (language)
B1 grammar (conditionals, passive, aspect, conjunctions); 2-minute monologues; formal writing templates (žádost, stížnost); natural-speed news (ČT24, Radiožurnál).
Reálie prep (civics)
Spaced repetition on the official 300; group by institution; timed 30/30 sims; drill negative stems (není / neplatí).
If one session mixes B1 grammar drills with “how many senators,” you are diluting both. Separate workflows.
Common Pitfalls
- Submitting A2 for citizenship (citizenship needs B1)
- Skipping reálie because “I know how the country works”
- Assuming daily spoken Czech equals B1 formal writing / monologue
- Studying the 300-question bank while still only aiming at PR / A2
- Sitting reálie before you can read Czech at natural speed
FAQ
Are the language and civics exams taken together?
No. Separate registrations. You can book them the same day or months apart. A combo fee usually means you paid for both at once, not that they merge into one test.
Does passing CCE B1 exempt me from reálie?
No. There is no overlap. A perfect language score does not replace a single civics question.
Can I use my A2 certificate for citizenship?
No. Citizenship language requirements point to B1. A2 is typically for permanent residence paths — confirm your case on official pages.
What if I fail one exam but pass the other?
You retake only the failed exam. For reálie that means the full 30-question sitting and fee. For CCE, centres often allow retaking the failed part (written or oral) — confirm current centre rules.
Is there an official question bank for reálie?
Yes. NPI ČR publishes the 300-question pool. Every exam item is drawn from it. See UniPrep2Go’s complete reálie guide for topic strategy.
Can I prepare for both exams simultaneously?
You can, but sequential prep usually wins: lock B1 reading/writing first, then attack the 300-question civics bank. Language skills make timed reálie reading easier.
What does UniPrep2Go offer for each exam?
Language: Czech CCE Anki deck. Civics: free Czech Citizenship readiness check plus planned Czech Citizenship Anki waitlist. Neither replaces official ÚJOP / NPI materials.
Bottom Line
Czech citizenship is a two-exam project: CCE certifies communication; reálie certifies state knowledge. Separate timelines, separate study plans. Do not let a strong CCE create false confidence about the 300-question bank — or let civics flashcards distract you from B1 grammar.
