Sample Anki card: A water tank can be filled by pipe A alone in 12 hours and by pipe B alone in 18 hours. If both pipes work together for 4 hours and then pipe A is closed, how many additional hours will it take pipe B alone to finish filling the tank?

A water tank can be filled by pipe A alone in 12 hours and by pipe B alone in 18 hours. If both pipes work together for 4 hours and then pipe A is closed, how many additional hours will it take pipe B alone to finish filling the tank?

Correct: (c) 10 hours. Combined rate 1/12 + 1/18 = 5/36; after 4 hours they fill 5/9, so B alone needs 10 more hours for the remaining 4/9.

Sample Anki card: Despite the composer's reputation for creating ______ works that challenged audiences, her latest symphony was surprisingly ______, featuring melodies that even casual listeners could easily appreciate and remember.

Despite the composer's reputation for creating ______ works that challenged audiences, her latest symphony was surprisingly ______, featuring melodies that even casual listeners could easily appreciate and remember.

Correct: (d) abstruse ... accessible. 'Despite' sets up a contrast: her usual difficult work versus a surprisingly approachable new symphony.

Sample Anki card: In a coordinate plane, the vertices of a parallelogram are located at points A, B, C, and D. If three of the vertices are A(2, 3), B(7, 5), and C(9, 1), what are the coordinates of the fourth vertex D?

In a coordinate plane, the vertices of a parallelogram are located at points A, B, C, and D. If three of the vertices are A(2, 3), B(7, 5), and C(9, 1), what are the coordinates of the fourth vertex D?

Correct: (a) (4, −1). Opposite sides are equal as vectors: using AB = DC (or AD = BC) yields D(4, −1).
